Night Light Lounge, a second view

2100 SE Clinton
Happy Hour: 3-7PM daily, late night (11PM - 1AM) Sunday - Thursday

Wow! That was the best four dollar house salad I think I've ever had. And, I'm big on house salads--ordering them almost everywhere I go (especially at happy hour prices). I'm completely impressed. The mix of greens was well-balanced (no bitter bites at all), there was an abundance of cheese and hazelnuts, and there wasn't just a garnish of apple slices on top--there were enough to go around, adding a crunch of flavor to many bites throughout. Yummy.

The rest of the food was pretty scrumptious as well. To go along with my salad, I ordered the cheese plate (which came highly recommended by those who had been to the Night Light before). For the five dollar price, it was a great deal. There were three kinds of cheese, toasted slices of baguette, some hazelnuts and a few dried apricots. I also had a few bites of the spicy mac and cheese. It came in a big bowl--leaving plenty for me to try--and was topped with french fried onions (similar to but not at all like the kinds on the grocery store shelf).

On one of those annual weeks of hot, hot weather in Portland (at least three consecutive days of 95+ degrees), the drink special listed on the front of the menu was PERFECT. It was a tall glass of strawberry lemonade, with vodka, a house-made lemondar, and a fresh strawberry puree. And, it was so good (and so refreshing) that I had to order two.

The seating at the Night Light offers just about every option you might need. For our happy hour this week, there were a few more people than usual...but we were still accommodated by the stretch of couches and low tables along the side wall. The length of the bench itself made conversations across the way a little more challenging...but, with a few turns around the crowd, one could easily mix and mingle as necessary. For a family dinner it might not be suitable...but, for a big group of teachers getting together in the summertime, it worked.

Our server was pretty fantastic, too. She asked US if we wanted our bill split. How often does that happen? It's usually a request we have to make on our own. She was also incredibly accommodating to the crowd of people arriving at various times. She came back again and again to take orders, clear plates, and make sure everyone had everything that they wanted.
