Mellow Mushroom

 Mellow Mushroom
1411 NW Flanders Street
Happy Hour 3-6 p.m. daily
Mellow Mushroom is a national chain, but it is new to Portland. I happened to get a Groupon for the restaurant, so my husband and I decided to try it out for my birthday dinner.  We went on a Saturday, and we were pleasantly surprised to see that they offer Happy Hour throughout the restaurant every single day.

My husband is a huge wing fan, so he ordered the 3-2-1 ($4.75) from the Happy Hour menu. It included garlic bread, a meatball skewer, and a few wings. Although it wasn't the most exciting appetizer, he enjoyed it.  He probably would have liked it better if it had more wings and less garlic bread. My appetizer, on the other hand, was awesome. I got the Freshie ($3.75), which was half bruschetta and half capri salad. It was made with very high quality ingredients and tasted better than the same dishes that I have had at non-chain restaurants.  I am not even a huge fan of bruschetta (the bread is often way too hard to eat), but this version was absolutely delicious. I was impressed that it was so good and so cheap.

Although we didn't order alcoholic drinks, they had a number of drink specials (including special deals depending on the day of the week).

We decided we should be adventurous with our pizza selection since it seems like Mellow Mushroom is known for interesting pizzas.  We went for the Red Skin Potato Pie. We were a little nervous since neither of us had ever had pizza with potatoes on it, but we shouldn't have worried. It was delicious. It had potatoes, caramelized onions, ranch sauce and bacon. It also was slightly spicy. Both of us really enjoyed it.

Both of us were really intrigued by the servers here. While the name gave us the impression that there would be a hippie vibe, all of the servers were very Portland (Portland hippies, not Portland hipsters). We couldn't figure out if this was part of their required attire and demeanor, due to this being Mellow Mushroom, or if they were just Portland people who happened to fit in with the vibe of the restaurant. In any case, everyone was very nice and laid back and hippie-ish. No complaints here.
