Sunshine Tavern

3111 SE Division Street
Happy Hour: 5 - 6 PM, daily

Finding a parking spot on Division used to be fairly easy. Not anymore. Like Alberta, Mississippi and Williams, this neighborhood is changing. Yes, it has always been lined with restaurants. But not this many. It's nearly overwhelming. It seems like there are new places--or second locations of already established places--opening every other week. The Sunshine Tavern is one of those second locations. Owned by the husband-and-wife team behind North Portland's Lincoln Restaurant, the Sunshine Tavern opened in the spring of 2011. They offer what looks like an amazing dinner menu (at reasonable prices) and happy hour, twice daily.

The happy hour menu at Sunshine Tavern includes everything from small salty snacks to food that can easily become a full meal. I'm not a meat-eater, but I am sure that they do well offering both the Sunshine Corndog and the fries piled high with cheese and sausage gravy. Discounts are available on drinks, too. They offer a bucket of sessions for only nine bucks! They also offer discounts on draught beer, house wine, a bartender's special, or a slushy margarita straight from the slushy machine.

Most impressive, however, was that both the Pacman and Donkey Kong arcade games were FREE. Ahhhh, happiness...without the need for quarters. They've got shuffleboard, too.

The arcade games kept us busy while waiting for our food. I ordered the perciatelli with tomato butter sauce and Parmesan. The sauce was sweeter than I expected but went well when paired with an oversized glass of red wine.

Next to me was a mountain of fries covered with what seemed like an unnecessary amount of pork sausage gravy. (I say that, of course, because the abundance of meat kept me from snagging a clean fry from the stack.) The plate was a little too much for one, but didn't seem quite suitable for take out. The fries held up while at the Sunshine Tavern, but could have easily turned into a soggy mess once transferred from the original plate to a box to go.

Sunshine Tavern is not the only option for happy hour on Division, but offering one early and one late increases your odds of dining at a discount. And we like those odds.
